The End of ROE V WADE

This is the latest in a series of political “poems” (more doggerel than poetry – see “The Chosen One,” “Banana Republicans,” and “Humpty Trumpty”). This one is inspired by the recently-leaked opinion of Supreme Court Justice, Samuel Alito abolishing the rights guaranteed in the 1972 High Court decision, Roe v Wade, guaranteeing a woman’s right to control her own body. The Supreme Court is expected to announce this decision in June. The quotation near the end, “The Second Coming is at hand,” is from the poem, “The Second Coming,” by William Butler Yeats.

With the stroke of five pens, they'll soon cancel Roe,

Reasserting their power over every Jane Doe.

Using words as if swords, personal liberty is smote.

Free choice is aborted, a Constitutional footnote.

Lifetime appointments protect like a moat

A partisan Court, aloof and remote.

So, raise your voices for all our sakes – but goddammit, go out and vote!

“We got what we wanted,” the Republicans gloat,

A handmaid’s tale is what they promote.

So, raise your voices for all our sakes – but goddammit, go out and vote!

The union is broken, it’s no longer afloat.

Freedom is strangled by a wire-hanger garrote!

Now, what are they eying to deep-six from their boat?

Gay rights? The Pill? Just a couple to note.

A beast slouches toward Bethlehem – democracy’s endnote.
